Never mind, figured it out by looking at other submissions. Renamed the cover image to "Cover.png" instead of using the title, and uploaded a title.png containing the waveform.

Would appreciate some pointers on the "correct" way though. For instance, what rules decide if an image is to be used as cover image?

uploading a jpg should work. it is best to add this to the end of the file name:
_itemimage.jpg

png and gif also work but since the waveform is named IDENTIFIER.png if you upload a file with that name it will be used in place of the waveform image since that filename is what is expected for that position.
